HELLMANN'S 'SWEETENED BY HONEY'

Jason and I shot several campaigns for Hellmann's over the years and the 'We're On The Side Of Food' campaign was one of our favourites. Shot throughout Sao Paulo, Brazil across nine days we were tasked with capturing a huge archive of culinary and gastronomic moments, from documentary style shots of food provenance visiting farms across the country, to moments of street cast foodies enjoying, sharing and cooking a myriad of delicious recipes.

It was on this shoot that we met long time friend and collaborator, cinematographer Pedro Cardillo, the first of many projects we would end up working on together over the following years.

One of the biggest challenges on this shoot was the sheer volume of shots required, and the massive matrix of cast, locations and recipes involved, all which had very specific associations with particular products, scenarios and dishes. Jason and I would be camped out in the service production offices of the wonderful Ocean Films trying to piece together the jigsaw puzzle. Our production office ended up looking like a scene from CSI.

Nevertheless, after three weeks in Brazil we had a huge archive of remarkable gastronomic scenes in the can, a few scars (a trip to London's Tropical Diseases Unit on my return after being stung by a Brazilian warrior bee wasn't too much fun) and it was up to the talents of editor Matt Chodan @ Gorilla to piece it all together, which of course he did with aplomb.
